The group aims to assess, plan and pilot a PRRS control plan across Scotland, with a vision of developing a future strategy to eradicate Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) in the Scottish pig sector.
The pig sector is important to Scottish agriculture. Overall sector output in 2017 was almost £260 million, up from around £200 million the previous year. The future ambition is to double the value of the sector to over £500 million by 2030. In order to achieve this there is a pressing need to work towards the eradication of diseases - the most important being Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS).
PRRS is one of the costliest diseases within the pig industry affecting the performance of breeding, growing and finishing herds. The cost to the industry affected by PRRS is estimated to be around £80 per sow, £3.50 per pig marketed, or typically £40,000 for a 500 sow herd. Multiplied by approximately 60-80 affected herds this cost would be estimated at around £3 million to the industry each year. There is a need to assess, plan and pilot PRRS control across Scotland with a vision of developing a future strategy to eradicate PRRS in the Scottish pig sector.
