The second farmer grows 850 acres of potatoes for processing mainly for the chip and crisp market. It is headed by a farmer who has been growing potatoes all his life in the family business. The farm also grows combinable crops, has a livestock enterprise which rears beef through to finishing and which, together with the sheep flock, utilises a large area of HLS natural grassland. Potatoes form a substantial part of the farm`s activities and the crop is all grown for processing and is marketed through two grower groups.
This group is looking to reduce potato waste, optimise dry matter content and improve yields through using remote sensing data to assess in-field variation and potential nutrient deficiencies across potato crops. The farmers have not had previous experience using this kit, although it has undertaken pilot tests with the researcher previously. They want to understand how it can benefit their business and help reduce risk and waste/loss in their crops. Whilst this technology is developing they are keen to be at the forefront of innovation in potatoes and see a field lab as a great way of collaborating and getting more evidence of the technique’s impact.
