Local authority vegetable supply chain group

The idea was initiated by Edinburgh Council, with support from a fresh food supplier and Food for Life Scotland, which also has an expressed aim to increase the amount of locally-sourced and produced food in Scotland’s schools.

The group hopes that this project will put local sourcing at the heart of public sector supply chains, so that more young people in schools have the benefit of fresh, healthy and locally sourced food. Currently, 32% of school food budgets are spent on Scottish produce; and while 58% of all the vegetables sourced are pre-prepared, 70% of those are not Scottish. This is therefore a timely opportunity for this group to explore effective ways to localise the supply chain and support Scottish producers.
