Since autumn 2024, four farms in the Wyre catchment have been involved with testing an enhanced herbal ley mix alongside a classic herbal ley mix. The enhanced mix species have been chosen for their deep rooting characteristics, adding an element of natural flood management whilst improving soil health and structure. Over time the project will create a comparison between the two ley types and a control field at each farm, deepening our understanding of the potential for in-field natural flood management within a productive farming system and the possibilities of future payments rewarding herbal ley establishment and management.
In this event, we will discuss the challenges of establishing herbal leys, best practice for establishment, rotational grazing systems and our findings thus far.
Wednesday 16th July, 18:00-21:00,
We will meet at Claughton Village Hall, Stubbins Lane, Claughton-On-Brock, Churchtown PR3 0QH and will use it as a base, to include a visit to Hole House Farm, Claughton on Brock.
Established herbal leys managed through paddock grazing and a spring sown herbal ley field in the early stages of establishment.
The Wyre Rivers Trust team will host and lead the walk. Philip Miller, the farmer at Hole House, will tell us about his experiences establishing and maintaining herbal leys.
