FNZ Maize field lab triallists named runners up in Soil Carbon Farmers of the Year Awards

03 October 2025 Farmer-led research

We are excited to share that Malcolm and Catherine Barrett, triallists in the Farm Net Zero Maize Field Lab, have been named runners-up in the Soil Carbon Farmer Awards. The awards are designed to celebrate farmers and growers who are actively reducing their business climate impact through innovative management practices that lower greenhouse gas emissions.

As Duchy of Cornwall tenants and mixed farmers, Malcolm and Catherine have built a resilient farming system rooted in agroforestry, rotations, and community connections. Their work in the Maize Field Lab has focused on exploring how maize can be grown in ways that improve soil health and increase carbon sequestration, while reducing reliance on synthetic inputs.

Their insights and experiences are now being captured in a technical film for farmers, which will be shared at the Farm Net Zero project conference this November. The full Maize Field Lab report is now available to read on our website here.

Congratulations to Malcolm and Catherine for their inspiring contribution to climate-positive farming!
